Book Review: Content Writing Step-by-Step by Dale Kennedy

A book that changed how I write content. I picked up Content Writing Step-by-Step by Dale Kennedy with the hope of brushing up my skills, but what I got was a shift in mindset. One of the most important lessons I took from this book was around research. I’ve often skimmed the surface, done the bare minimum, and jumped into writing. This book made it clear: that's a mistake. Kennedy stresses that research is the backbone of strong writing. He calls it the “secret sauce” for a reason. You’re supposed to fill your head with way more information than you’ll actually use—and it shows in the final output. Now I get why my writing felt scattered sometimes: I was starting before I was ready. Another area where the book really helped me was in understanding the difference between content writing and copywriting . It’s something I’ve often blurred in my mind. Kennedy explains it so well, I don’t think I’ll ever confuse the two again. There’s also a very honest section about freelancing—som...

The discussion around content is constant, and everyone has an opinion and their own experiences to share. A few fundamentals are essential for organizing the content you plan to create, and content clusters are one of them.  If you are a content creator, then you cannot do without creating cluster content. Next, we’ll analyze what it takes to create and build a cluster. Let’s look at the steps. Creating Cluster 1: What is Cluster Content Cluster, as the word suggests, is a group of something that revolves or attaches itself to a central point. In content creation, a cluster attaches itself to a pillar, the central idea or theme. What is the pillar, then? Pillar Content Let’s assume you own a flower shop. Your central pillar theme will be ‘Flowers’.  Your pillar content piece would be a comprehensive guide like: The Ultimate Guide to Flowers: Everything You Need to Know. The cluster content that supports and links to this pillar will include: Different types of flowers: (e.g.,...

You’re probably wondering: “Who and where are these audiences sitting?” “How can we reach them?” The truth is, as a beginner, you don’t need that perfectly defined audience before launching your digital presence journey. Trust me, your passion and enthusiasm will reflect in your posts and attract like-minded people. Problem solving: Content that offe...

Blogging has survived for decades, and it appears to be gaining strength with each passing year, despite the ongoing changes in online platforms. Businesses use blogs to engage with their customers by sharing information about products and services. For authors, blogging provides increased web traffic, which leads to brand awareness and helps them establish trust with readers. The question that arises: Let’s explore the different aspects of blogging. 1: How to start an author blog? Before you decide on a blogging platform, figure out your pillar content. Since the authors have their book, the content will mostly revolve around their book. The topics you come up with around your book (pillar content) are your cluster content.  Besides talking about the book, authors can also add variety to the blog by sharing posts on behind-the-scenes, genre-specific writing tips for aspiring authors, books you liked, and describing various stages of the writing process. This method helps in pickin...

The Hook: Your Content's Power Play

The past few days have been hectic. I'm not complaining. I'm loving it. Because it's highly "productive hectic". Here is what I've been busy with... After struggling to understand the fundamentals of what not to do while working to establish an impactful online presence as a multi-form writer, I finally unravelled the mystery. Hook is everything. You might have the best content written, but if the hook is not razor-sharp, your labour is wasted. Because no one has the patience to listen to and watch the "lengthy introductions" you presented. Your followers want to know what value they are getting out of that post. And know it quickly, within the first few seconds. Because viewers and readers are using smart devices and you are not the only one creating content for their consumption. There are multiple platforms, and millions of content. Hook is your tool to grab their attention within the few seconds allotted to you.  Create ...

Why Writers Need a Website?

As a multi-form writer, I didn't realize the importance of having a personal website. If you are a writer and still wondering whether you should create a website or not, this post is definitely for you. It's important for writers to have a website As a multi-form writer, I recently built my website. For years, I avoided it, assuming LinkedIn, Medium, and social platforms were enough to showcase my work. But here are a few truths I learned... 1: A website strengthens your brand voice. If you're serious about building a personal brand, a website under your name is a must. After all, as writers, our names represent everything we write and stand for. Having a domain in your name adds weight and consistency to your online presence as a writer. Having a website with our name is one of the best options available. Use it to grow your brand.  2: It's your digital home. When you share blog content across social media platforms, you are actually inviting your followers to visit yo...
